Finally when it looks as though all is lost, we are told,
“And the Lord shall go forth and wage war with those nations, like the day he waged war on the day of the battle. And on that day His feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem from the east. And the Mount of Olives shall split in the midst thereof-toward the east and toward the west-a very great valley. And half the mountain shall move to the north, and half of it to the south.” (Zechariah 14:3-4)
God Himself will make His presence known in a supernatural manner, and begin to reveal His glory to the world. It is very interesting to note that the Mount of Olives has a very long fault line that goes across it, from East to West, as the bible has detailed. If a big enough earthquake were to occur, perhaps that would be the cause of the Mountain splitting in half.
The bible continues,
“And you shall flee to the valley of the mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach Azal. And you shall flee as you fled because of the earthquake, in the days of Uzziah the King of Judah. And the Lord, my God, shall come; all holy ones with you” (Zechariah 14:5).
The idea is that at this point, the presence of God will appear in the newly formed valley in the midst of the Mount of Olives. The Jewish survivors will find refuge in God’s supernatural splendor now manifest there.
The revealing of God’s power continues to unfold,
“And at My presence, the fishes of the sea and the birds of the heaven and the beasts of the field and all the creeping things that creep upon the earth and all the men who are upon the surface of the earth shall quake, and all the mountains shall be thrown down, and the cliffs shall fall to the ground.” (Ezekiel 37:20)
“And it shall come to pass on that day that there shall be no light, only disappearing light and thick darkness. And it shall be one day that shall be known to the Lord, neither day nor night; and it shall come to pass that at eventide it shall be light. And it shall come to pass on that day that spring water shall come forth from Jerusalem; half of it to the eastern sea, and half of it to the western sea; in summer and in winter it shall be. And the Lord shall become King over all the earth; on that day shall the Lord be one, and His name one.” (Zechariah 14:6-9)
Clearly a visibly supernatural event is being described.
And what of Gog and his armies?
“For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken; Surely there shall be a great noise on that day in the land of Israel.” (Ezekiel 38:18,19)
“And I will smite the bow out of your left hand and make your arrows fall from your right hand.” (Ezekiel 39:3)
Though the prophets speak of bows and arrows, they likely would not have had an ancient Hebrew expression to convey the idea of guns.
“And it will come to pass on that day that there will be great consternation, sent by the Lord upon them; each one shall seize the hand of the other, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of the other.” (Zechariah 13:14)
“And I will call the sword against him upon all My mountains, says the Lord God: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.” (Ezekiel 38:21)
“And I will judge against him with pestilence and with blood, and rain bringing floods, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone will I rain down upon him and upon his hordes and upon the many peoples that are with him.” (Ezekiel 38:22)
“And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the nations who besieged Jerusalem; his flesh will waste away while he still stands on his feet; his eyes will waste away in their sockets, and his tongue shall waste away in his mouth.” (Zechariah 14:12)
“Upon the mountains of Israel shall you fall, you and all your hordes, and the people that are with you; to the birds of prey, to all the winged creatures and the beasts of the field have I given you to be devoured.” (Ezekiel 39:4)
“And I will send fire on Magog and on those who dwell in safety in the islands, and they will know that I am the Lord.” (Ezekiel 39:6)
“And I shall publicize My glory among the nations, and all the nations will see My judgement that I performed and My hand that I place upon them.” (Ezekiel 39:21)
“And I will reveal Myself in My greatness and in My holiness and will be recognized in the eyes of many nations, and they will know that I am the Lord.” (Ezekiel 38:23)
“And the Lord shall become King over all the earth; on that day shall the Lord be one, and His name one.” (Zechariah 14:9)
What happens to the remaining Jews at this point?
“And the House of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God from that day on.” (Ezekiel 39:22)
“And I will make known My Holy Name in the midst of My people Israel, and I will no longer cause My Holy Name to be profaned, and the nations will know that I, the Lord, am holy in Israel.” (Ezekiel 39:7)
“And the nations will know that for their iniquity the House of Israel was exiled, because they betrayed Me, and I hid My face from them, and I delivered them into the hands of their adversaries, and they all fell by the sword.
According to their defilement and according to their transgressions I did to them, and I hid My face from them.
Therefore, so said the Lord God: Now I shall return to the captivity of Jacob, and I shall have compassion on the House of Israel, and I shall be zealous for My Holy Name.
And they shall bear their disgrace and all their treachery that they committed against Me when they dwell on their land securely with no one frightening them.” (Ezekiel 39:23-26)
“And it will be, when all these things come upon you the blessing and the curse which I have set before you that you will consider in your heart, among all the nations where the Lord your God has banished you,
and you will return to the Lord, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul, and you will listen to His voice according to all that I am commanding you this day you and your children,
then, the Lord, your God, will bring back your exiles, and He will have mercy upon you. He will once again gather you from all the nations, where the Lord, your God, had dispersed you,
Even if your exiles are at the end of the heavens, the Lord, your God, will gather you from there, and He will take you from there.” (Deuteronomy 30:1-4)
“And they will know that I am the Lord their God when I exile them to the nations, and I shall gather them to their land, and I shall no longer leave any of them there.” (Ezekiel 39:28)
Midrashim tell how God will make known who are the lost Jews amongst the nations, some who don’t even know they had any Jewish heritage at all. They too will be brought to Israel.
“And the Lord, your God, will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, [so that you may] love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, for the sake of your life.” (Deuteronomy 30:6)
“And the Lord, your God, will make you abundant for good in all the work of your hands, in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For the Lord will once again rejoice over you for good, as He rejoiced over your forefathers,” (Deuteronomy 30:9).
And the final result of these events is that in the end all the people of the world will unite with Israel in peace, harmony, and brotherhood,
“All nations that You made will come and prostrate themselves before You, O Lord, and glorify Your name.” (Psalms 86:9)
After reading all of this, one could fall into despair. If this has all been predicted already, what can be done to stop it? The prophet Isaiah provides an answer. When speaking of the coming messianic era, he quotes God as saying, “In its time, I will hasten it” (Isaiah 60:22). The sages note something peculiar in these words. If the redemption is to happen “in its time” at an exact time in history, then why does God then say, “I will hasten it” i.e. I will bring the redemption early?
What the sages explain is that we are being given a choice here. If we do not inspire one another to change our attitudes, and come to understand that there is a mission and purpose in life, to bring goodness and light to this world, and do everything in our power to better ourselves, then the redemption will unfold as described above “in its time.” However, if we can awaken and help the world realize that there is a meaning and purpose to everything, and help each other reach for that higher purpose of doing that which is good and just, then God says, “I will hasten it,” and negate all the unfortunate events that have been predicted. The choice is ultimately up to us.
